Petroglyphs of the Pueblo People

Petroglyphs of the Pueblo People

September 03, 2018

Drive an hour northwest of the city and you’ll reach Bandelier National Monument—a place of peach colored cliffs, chalky petroglyphs, and deep caves. From the Visitor Center take the easy mile-long trail through Frijoles Canyon to the main archaeological sites of Big Kiva, Talus House, and Long House. Hike another mile through the canyon and clamber up several short ladders to reach Ceremonial Cave. But with more than 30,000 acres of land and 60 miles of trails, you’re sure to feel like a true explorer as you wander through the remnants of a lost time. Plan your trip carefully as passenger cars are only allowed access all the way to the canyon before 9 a.m. and after 3 p.m. Remember to pack in, pack out to maintain the site for generations to come.
