St Francis Cathedral

Cathedral Basilica of St. Francis of Assisi, known commonly as St Francis Cathedral, is one of the most visited locations on visitors’ tour of the Santa Fe Plaza.  The Cathedral is located grandly at the top of the plaza close to a historic Santa Fe hotel.  

St. Francis Cathedral has a rich history that began in the 1600s with the building of a small adobe church later destroyed in the Pueblo Revolt of 1680 and replaced by an adobe church called La Parroquia which stood for almost 200 years.

In 1869, Archbishop Jean Baptiste Lamy constructed the current church over and around La Parroquia in the French Gothic and Romanesque style.  Stone from local quarries and stained glass windows, created in France and delivered via covered wagon, add to the design details. 
A wooden statue of the Virgin known as Our Lady of Peace resides in the sanctuary after being first brought to Santa Fe in 1625.  Archbishop Lamy died on February 14, 1888 and is buried under the sanctuary floor of his beloved St. Francis Cathedral.  Archbishop John Baptist Pitaval, fifth Archbishop of Santa Fe, dedicated the bronze statue of Archbishop Lamy which stands in front of the Cathedral.
